7 days of trekking in the Bale Mountains National park

Day 1 Lake Langano 4-5hrs transfer
We arrive into Addis Abeba airport early and once through we make our way to a relaxing breakfast overlooking the city. From here we transfer 4-5 hours south to our hotel on the shore of Lake Langano. We have lunch here and this afternoon have time to relax and this evening we have a welcome meal of traditional Ethiopian food before an early night in preparation for our start tomorrow.
Day 2 Sodota campsite 3550m 3hrs transfer & 6-7 hrs trekking
After an early morning wakeup call, we transfer 3-4 hours by road through some beautiful scenery, which becomes increasingly mountainous, to Dinsho and the Headquarter of the bale mountains national park. Here we have an early lunch and start our trek across the Kotea plains to the beautiful Habera waterfall and then on to our camp at Sodota 6-7 hours.
Day 3 Keyrensa 3900m 8hrs trekking
During this morning trek, we will be having a good chance spotting Ethiopian wolf even though their numbers have been drastically reduced to a recent distemper outbreak. We continue through the Wolo and Marero valleys with its clean and crisp air and stunning scenery. This afternoon we trek alongside the bale escarpments where lammergeyer and verraux eagles keep nests all the way to our next camp at keyrensa.
Day 4 Rafu campsite 4000m 4-6hrs trekking
After breakfast, our trek continues. If you have a binocular with you today, it may be possible to spot africa’s finest songbird, the Abysinian cat bird, as well as the endemic Menelik’s bushback, grey duiker and Bohor Reedbuck. Furthermore, exploration will take us in to the woodlands where more elusive animals such as the Serval cat, spotted hyena and golden jackal reside, which commonly heard calling in the early evening once we arrive at Rafu campsite.
Day 5 Tulu Dimtu 4373m 7-9hrs
This day is a tough and demanding day as we climb up in to the highlands across the desolate Senetti plateau to Batu Mountain, 4200m. From here, we continue to the summit of Tulu Dimtu at 4377m the highest mountain in Bale and the fourth highest mountain in Ethiopia. After lunch, we descend to our camp at the base of the valley which overlooks lake Gebre guracha.
Day 6 Little Batu 6-8hrs trekking
After breakfast we start our last trekking to the summit of Mt Batu and passing through the desolate and beautiful Senetti plateau. After lunch, we pass through Worgona, descend to our camp at little Batu and tonight we have a camp celebration with the local team of horsemen, kitchen and support staff to thank them for their help and friendship over the last few days.
Day 7 Addis Abeba 2hrs trekking 8hrs transfer
Today we descend 2hrs to our waiting vehicles that will transfer us all the way to Addis Abeba. We stop for lunch along the way and this evening we mark the end of our trek challenge with a classic Ethiopian meal at traditional restaurant. Our hotel beds tonight should give us a blissful night sleep!
